This position reports to the Business Decision Finance - Director.

Overview of the internship program:
Join our dynamic accounting and finance team for an immersive 8-week summer internship, designed to provide hands-on experience in key financial operations and projects. Interns will touch on several different aspects of Heartland Dental Accounting and Finance operations including, but not limited to, financial planning and analysis over Heartland Dental offices, accounting month-end close, financial analytics, various accounting functions surround PP&E, revenue, and compensation among others. Interns will operate at a staff level and work through at least two projects throughout the duration of their internship and end with a final presentation to upper management, showcasing their project outcomes and key learnings.

Key Responsibilities:
Throughout the internship, interns will follow a program that resembles the following:

  • Week 1: Onsite in Effingham, Illinois (or Indianapolis, IN) to undergo initial orientation and initial project setup. This week will be about learning the ins and outs of the company’s finance structure, team structure, and setting internship goals.
  • Weeks 2-3: Hybrid between Effingham, IL (or Indianapolis, IN) and remote work with first project commencement. Gaining experience in core accounting functions, including journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and data analysis.
  • Weeks 4-5: Hybrid between Effingham, IL (or Indianapolis, IN) and remote work with second project commencement. Midpoint check-in in Effingham, IL to reflect on current internship status, learnings and goals update.
  • Week 6: Hybrid between Effingham, IL (or Indianapolis, IN) and remote work with third project commencement or continued development on first/second projects.
  • Week 7-8: Hybrid between Effingham, IL (or Indianapolis, IN) and remote work. Begin preparing for the final presentation creating an interactive PowerPoint on internship developments, goal accomplishments, and overall insights from your time as an intern with Heartland Dental. Present to senior management and receive feedback.

What You Have the Opportunity to Learn:

  • Financial statement analysis and reporting standards
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and cost analysis processes
  • Real-time accounting month end and account reconciliations
  • Professional presentation skills, with a focus on financial data
  • Insight into daily operations in a finance department through mentorship and shadowing

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Strong analytical skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to travel as the program requires

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
