Position Summary:

IT Security Engineer, Cloud

 

As an IT Cloud Security Engineer, you are responsible for protecting the organization’s cloud-based systems, data, and applications. You design and implement security solutions tailored to cloud environments, ensuring that cloud infrastructure and services are resilient against threats and compliant with regulatory requirements. Your work involves collaborating with IT and business teams to integrate security into every phase of cloud adoption and operation. You proactively identify risks, respond to incidents, and drive continuous improvement in cloud security practices to support the organization’s strategic goals.

To give you an idea of the team structure, you will work on a team of Security Analysts and Security Engineers reporting to the Director of Information Security. 

Below is an overview of the duties and responsibilities you would take on in this role:

  • Design and implement security controls for cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Monitor cloud environments for suspicious activity, vulnerabilities, and compliance issues.
  • Respond to cloud security incidents by investigating alerts, containing threats, and coordinating remediation.
  • Manage identity and access by configuring roles, permissions, and multi-factor authentication for cloud resources.
  • Conduct regular cloud security assessments including penetration testing, vulnerability scans, and configuration reviews.
  • Automate security tasks using cloud-native tools and scripting (e.g., Infrastructure as Code, security orchestration).
  • Collaborate with Application Development and engineering teams to integrate security into CI/CD pipelines and application deployments.
  • Review and enforce cloud security policies for data protection, encryption, and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay up to date on cloud security trends, threats, and best practices; recommend improvements as needed.
  • Educate staff and stakeholders on secure cloud usage and emerging risks.
  • Support audits and compliance initiatives by providing evidence and documentation for cloud controls.
  • Evaluate and deploy cloud security solutions
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of one of the following:
    • Five years of experience in cloud security, cloud architecture, information security, or a related field.
    • Associate degree and not less than two years of experience in cloud security or related fields.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field with one year of experience in cloud security or related fields.
  • Understanding of cloud security frameworks and standards (e.g., CSA CCM, CIS, NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27017/27018).
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for cloud environments (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOC 2).
  • Knowledge of cloud provider security tools and services (e.g., Azure Security Center, Google Security Command Center).
  • Skilled in scripting and automation using CLI, PowerShell, Bash, and/or JSON templates.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for cloud risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers in a collegial manner to accomplish common tasks.
  • High level of maturity, personal initiative, and sound judgment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant certifications such as:
    • Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP)
    • Azure Security Engineer Associate
    • Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer
    • CISSP, CISM, or similar credentials
  • Proven experience in cloud security, cloud risk management, or related fields, preferably in a regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, finance).
  • Strong understanding of cloud regulatory requirements and industry standards (e.g., HIPAA, PCI-DSS, ISO 27017/27018).
